LISTEN BELOW TO DURANTE TALKING ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE PHOENIX
Wellington Phoenix captain Andrew Durante believes the club should play home games away from Westpac Stadium for the “survival and growth of the club.”
Durante told Michael Zappone and Tony Pignata on FNR_Football Nation Radio’s Football Bosses the stadium is “way too big” and the club should be tapping into the fact they are a “one country team.”
Durante proposed it would be better for the club to play games in smaller purpose-built stadiums across New Zealand to grow the Phoenix brand and supporter base.
“For the survival of the football club we really need to be taking games away. We need to broaden our brand and grow our supporters,” Durante said.
Durante said the atmosphere when the Phoenix played at Lower Hutt Stadium was “awesome” due to atmosphere created.
“We got ten to fifteen thousand all really close to the ground,” Durante said.
Moreover, when asked to comment on beliefs the Phoenix should be evicted from the A-League, Durante believes the club “bring something different to the league.”
“I can understand we’re the outsiders but we’re trying to grow the league and I don’t think kicking us out is the answer,” Durante said.
Football Bosses airs every Wednesday from 7pm (AEDT) hosted by Michael Zappone and Tony Pignata on FNR_Football Nation Radio.
