LISTEN TO FRANCK MCGRELLIS' THOUGHTS ON THE NPL STRUCTURE BELOW
Bentleigh Greens technical director, Frank McGrellis has sounded a warning to parents about the reality of trialling for NPL clubs.
Talking on FNR_Football Nation Radio’s - The Winning Coach, McGrellis told Chris Appleford clubs struggle to accommodate for all players who trial for National Premier League clubs due to the FFV Junior Structure imposed in 2014.
“This is where the reality of the games comes into it,” McGrellis said.
“At NPL level we have basically got restrictions on the number of players we can bring into a squad. The unfortunate thing is we can’t accommodate everybody,” McGrellis said.
McGrellis went on to explain the “cruel” nature of culling trialists who don’t make the final twenty players in an NPL squad and what the future holds for them.
“In one of our [Bentleigh’s] age groups we had up to 76 registered trialists and we were only allowed to take up to a maximum of twenty kids,” McGrellis said.
“So that’s a minimum of 56 players we have had to say ‘sorry we can’t accommodate you, we have to show you the door,” McGrellis said.
“Some only want to play NPL and will trial at one, two or three clubs with the view of being selected at other clubs. Some families only want to be involved with the club, so they might actually leave the game,” McGrellis said.
McGrellis also believes football are losing players due to the NPL system and the cost of playing for one of these clubs.
“We lose a lot of kids because of the system and we can’t accommodate for everybody,” McGrellis said.
“There is no doubt that there are community kids out there who have loads of ability who don’t get involved in the NPL due to circumstances,"McGrellis said.
Frank McGrellis is the technical director of Bentleigh Greens in the National Premier League in Victoria. He appears on The Winning Coach with Chris Appleford every Tuesday night at 6PM (AEST) on FNR_Football Nation Radio
