Newly appointed Perth Glory CEO Tony Pignata says attracting a player like Alessandro Del Piero to the A-League today is “impossible.”
Mr Pignata believes the financial gap between the A-League and the MLS in particular has made it very difficult to attract marquee players for a lengthy duration.
“When Sydney did the deal with Del Piero it was a very unique deal but the MLS wasn’t at the level it is now,
“It’s huge money and A-League clubs just can’t sustain it,” Mr Pignata said.
Mr Pignata has held the Chief Executive position at the FFV, Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix prior to this appointment.
Along the journey, Mr Pignata says one of the most important lessons learned has been to “bridge relationships.”
“I’m going to go out to our fans in the shed and members just to touch base with them as well as out to the communities to hear what they expect from an A-League club,” Mr Pignata said.
Mr Pignata told FNR_Football Nation Radio he is excited to be immersed in a city with a “massive football history” and looks forward to the challenges ahead.
“We have a new coach, there are about ten players we have to recruit and there’s a lot of hype,"
“We have to make sure June 18 when pre-season starts the focus is to ultimately get into finals and make the Grand Final,” Mr Pignata said.
