listen to george christopoulos discuss his experience in paraguary
Former Socceroo George Christopoulos says travelling to Paraguary to qualify for the 1979 FIFA youth World Cup was a “real geography lesson.”
Christopoulos says the crowd and local media “became very spiteful” during the qualification series which prompted manager Rudi Gutendorf into action.
Christopoulos told Carlos Alberto Diego on FNR_Football Nation Radio’s Club Socceroo Gutendorf took the team to interact with Paraguarian tribesmen to ease media scrutiny.
“We went and saw these amazon Indians with spears and [Gutendorf] said we should play a game against them,” Christopoulos said.
Christopoulos recounts it took place in a paddock where there were “300 of them with hardly any clothes on and spears in hand.”
It is believed Gutendorf organised this to show the media how the squad were willing to interact with the locals.
Club Socceroo airs every Monday from 10am (AEDT) hosted by Carlos Alberto Diego on FNR_Football Nation Radio.
