Wanderers shot stopper Vedran Janjetović insists the transition to Josep Gombau as their new coach and events that happen “backstage” are “not going to be an excuse” for their rocky season.
Speaking with Calcio Café host Carlos Alberto Diego, Western Sydney Wanderers goalkeeper Vedran Janjetović discussed his side’s performance following the 3-0 loss to Melbourne City on Saturday night. Janjetović opened about the “unfortunate” result that cost the Wanderers a “massive 3 points”.
Western Sydney’s lost to Melbourne City makes it only 1 win from their last 5 Hyundai A-league matches, leaving Janjetović’s side only one point above 6th place with 3 games remaining.
“We have a great morale, but it has been up and down for us unfortunately”, he said, “we missed the key points in our execution of what we wanted to do during the game, and it really cost us a lot.”
Janjetović was then asked about the progression of the team, and if the transition to new Coach Josep Gombau has made any impact on their form.
“It throws out a lot more than just what happens on the field. There’s things that happen backstage as well, things that people don’t really see or hear about every day but for us its obviously filtered all the way through.”
“It’s not going to be our excuse, I mean, we all know how to play football and that’s something that we all do, and we know how to do”, Janjetović stated. “It’s a not like a new coach comes in and we automatically forget how to play football”.
Janjetović elaborated on the changes in his role under Gombau, which differs tactically compared to Popovic’s old structure.
“It changed a lot to be fair, but that’s just the way Josep wants us to play and we have to adapt. I’ve learnt to accept that.”
“I sat down with Josep and he explained everything; I was up for it I was always up for it, I will never back down.”
Janjetović turned his attention to the upcoming match against Melbourne Victory, where 3 points will be vital if the Wanderers are to secure a top 6 finish.
