Former Socceroo Vince Grella believes Brazil felt “uncomfortable” playing against Australia during their 2006 FIFA World Cup Group match.
Despite losing the match 2-0 Grella says the Socceroos “frustrated the life out of [Brazil]” and admits the Socceroos should have gotten more out of the match.
Both of Brazil’s goals came from counter attacks, something Grella says was uncharacteristic considering “a majority of teams would park the bus against Brazil.”
“We didn’t take our chances and that’s the difference at that level,” Grella said.
Grella was also involved in an incident with Brazil’s Ronaldo during the match to which Grella says he “remembers getting the ball and not being shown a yellow card.”
Grella told FNR_Football Nation Radio he had been motivated by Ronaldo’s comments during the week where the Brazilian said he had never heard of any Australian player.
“I’m hoping after he was icing his shin that maybe he’d remember that name,” Grella said.
