listen to alan davidson discuss being approached to cooperate in match fixing
Former Socceroo Alan Davidson reveals how a conversation with a fan in a hotel lobby nearly “jeopardised [his] career” while playing in Malaysia.
Davidson told Carlos Alberto Diego on FNR_Football Nation Radio how an undercover bookmaker approached him and offered a large sum to cooperate in match fixing.
“We talked for about half an hour and then he started to weasel around money and finances, ‘I can help you make money, more money than you can imagine’,” Davidson said.
Davidson said the bookmaker then handed him a “a brown paper bag with $70,000 US in it” and revealed he was informed by the bookmaker many players from his team had been “bought.”
“I told him, ‘I can’t believe what you’ve just done. You’ve not only jeopardised my image and my situation – I didn’t realise you were a bookie’,” Davidson said.
Davidson rejected the offer and informed the manager and the owners of what had occurred.
“There’s huge money involved they’re syndicates,
"It’s millions of dollars riding on this stuff,” Davidson said.
