Hear Archie's take on Saturday's VAR Malfunction:
Melbourne Victory legend Archie Thompson says the VAR incident during the Grand Final was “embarrassing” this morning on FNR_Football Nation Radio.
Thompson believes the controversy surrounding the VAR could “scar what was a good win” for the Melbourne Victory.
“I’m obviously Victory through and through and glad they won the championship, but you don’t want a decision like that to determine a Grand Final.” Thompson said.
Thompson believes the introduction of VAR has been helpful but says it is “ridiculous” how something like this could happen in such a big game.
“You’ve got people in there watching videos and they can see that it’s offside and I just don’t think they have the balls to make those crucial decisions,” Thompson said.
Melbourne Victory has now become the most successful club in A-League history and joins former NSL clubs South Melbourne, Sydney City and Marconi as the most successful football clubs in Australia.
Much of Thompson’s praise went towards goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas and the defensive partnership of Thomas Deng and James Donachie.
“Strikers win games but defenders win championships,” Thompson said.
