Former Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson imagines Oliver Bozanic will receive “a nice reception” as he returns to his former club for the first time in a Melbourne City shirt in this Friday’s Melbourne Derby.
Speaking to FNR’s Football Extra on their Melbourne Derby special, Thompson said that although it was disappointing he would be showing up for the opposition, Bozanic ultimately left Victory “on good terms” when he joined J-League side Ventforet Kofu in March 2017.
“He saw an opportunity to go over and play in a good league and further his football,” he said. “You can’t frown upon someone who’s trying to do that. We’re only in the game for a short amount of time and you want to experience as much as you can.”
Thompson also recounted some of his favourite derby moments, including his famous last minute clincher in Victory’s 2-1 defeat of Melbourne Heart on 22 December 2012, the replay of which he admitted to having seen “a lot of times … on YouTube”.
The goal is also memorable for Thompson’s celebration and subsequent heated exchange with a Melbourne Heart fan, which he dismissed as “banter” and insisted he “love[s] moments like that”.
“I see [opposition abuse] more as a sign of respect,” he said. “When I go to games or whenever anyone stops me, they say ‘Look, I’m a Sydney FC supporter but I love the way you play, you always play with a smile.’
“I think that’s the kind of legacy I wanted to leave.”
Melbourne Victory will face Melbourne City on Friday Night at AAMI Park from 7:50pm (AEDT).
Football Extra airs daily from 9am (AEDT) with Carlos Alberto Diego on FNR_Football Nation Radio.
