Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold says the team believe they are capable of “taking it all the way to [the] number one [FIFA Word ranking].”
Arnold says being ranked fourth in the world “has not really sunk in” and team still see themselves as the “underdogs” in every game they play.
“It’s very different being on the opposite side of the scale, the fact we’re one of the powerhouses and one of the teams to beat,” Arnold said.
Despite finishing on top of their group in the Algarve Cup the Matildas missed a place in the final due to goal difference and will now play Portugal in a third-place playoff.
“It would have been ideal to make the final but as a whole we have been quite impressed with our performances,” Arnold said.
Following the tournament, the team’s focus will shift towards the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in April in Jordan which the Matilda’s will enter as favourites.
Arnold told Carlos Alberto Diego on FNR_Football Nation Radio’s Calcio Cafe the Algarve Cup has acted as good preparation for the Asian Cup which has been the “main focus.”
“This tournament has been a focal point on tightening the areas we need to improve on before the Asian Cup,” Arnold said.
Calcio Cafe airs daily from 7am (AEDT) hosted by Carlos Alberto Diego on FNR_Football Nation Radio.
